Moderna forskare har kommit att ifrågasätta existensen av åtminstone de första nio kejsarna; Kōgens ättling, kejsar Sujin (98 f.Kr. – 30 f.Kr.?), är den förste för vilken många är överens om att han faktiskt kan ha existerat.
