Joseph Koo Kar-Fai MBE GBS ( kinesiska : 顧嘉煇 ; 25 februari 1931 – 3 januari 2023) var en Hongkongkompositör. Han använde pennnamnet Moran (莫然) för mandarinlåtar tidigt i sin karriär. Enligt Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts var Koo en av de mest respekterade kompositörerna i Hong Kong.

Tidigt liv

Koo föddes i Canton , Kina och migrerade med sin familj till Hong Kong 1948.

Koo hade två syskon: en äldre syster, Hong Kong-sångaren och målaren Koo Mei (顧媚) och en yngre bror, Koo Kar-Tseung (顧嘉鏘).

Koo började lära sig musik vid 17 års ålder genom att ta pianolektioner från en filippinsk musiklärare, som redan gav sånglektioner till Koos syster.

Karriär

Koo sponsrades av Sir Run Run Shaw för att gå på Berklee College of Music i Boston i början av 1960-talet. Efter examen återvände han till Hong Kong och arbetade för både Shaw Brothers och Golden Harvest filmstudior, och gjorde bland annat poäng i Bruce Lee -filmerna Fist of Fury och The Way of the Dragon 1972.

Koo började på TVB som deras musikchef 1973, där han från slutet av 1970-talet tills han immigrerade till Kanada på 1990-talet, samarbetade med textförfattaren Wong Jim i många minnesvärda TV-temanslåtar. Koo har komponerat över 1 200 låtar i sin karriär, av vilka många nu anses vara klassiska Cantopop . Han har bara 2 anmärkningsvärda verk som textförfattare, både mycket korta i längd och totalt antal ord. Den ena var en barnsång om de tio numren, den andra var avslutningen "Godnatt"-jingeln för Enjoy Yourself Tonight . Dessa två föga kända fakta avslöjades av James Wong 1998 under en konsert tillägnad både Koo och honom.

1961 komponerade han sin första publicerade låt "Dream" ( 夢 ), som sjöngs av hans syster Koo Mei. Han hade senare en annan hitlåt "Suburban Road" 郊道. 1974 skrev han den första kantonesiska TV-temalåten The Fatal Irony som var en av de första populära Cantopop- låtarna.

Koo utnämndes till Order of the British Empire (MBE) 1982. 1998 fick han Bronze Bauhinia Star från Hong Kongs regering . Han fick också andra utmärkelser, inklusive Music Accomplishment Award (från Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd.), Highest Honor Award (från RTHK Ten Best Chinese Music Program), Best Music Award och Best Lyric Award (från Asia Film Festival), Hong Kong Film Awards , Taiwans Golden Horse Film Festival och Awards .

Koo immigrerade till Kanada på 1990-talet men fortsatte sitt arbete inom Hong Kong-musiken. 2007 skrev han temasången till The Drive of Life , ett drama producerat av TVB för att fira 10-årsdagen av överlämnandet av Hongkong .

Under 2012 från 30 november till 3 december höll han en konsert med titeln "Joseph Koo Concert 2012" på Hong Kong Coliseum, som innehöll många sångare inklusive Adam Cheng , George Lam , Teresa Cheung och Anthony Wong . 2015 tillkännagav han att han skulle gå i pension som dirigent, och att han avsevärt skulle minska sina musikaliska verk och bli oljemålare som sin syster.

Koo dog i Richmond , Kanada den 3 januari 2023, 92 år gammal. Josephs son, Koo Chi Ho, avslöjade att han hade drabbats av symtom och komplikationer av covid-19 och minskad aptit och energi veckor innan han gick bort. Han var annars vältränad och frisk innan.
