Som ett resultat av 1707 års förening av kungariket Skottland med kungariket England (inklusive Wales ) för att bilda kungariket Storbritannien, inom det nybildade Storbritanniens parlament , hade Skottland 48 valkretsar som representerade platser för 45 parlamentsledamöter ( MPs) i House of Commons , normalt beläget vid Palace of Westminster . (Westminster är mötesplatsen för det tidigare parlamentet i England) .

Skotska Westminster valkretsar användes först i 1708 års allmänna val . Före det valet representerades Skottland av parlamentsledamöter som adjungerades som kommissionärer för det tidigare Skottlands parlament .
I Storbritanniens parlament hade Skottland 15 burgh-valkretsar och 33 county-valkretsar , där varje representerade en plats för en MP. Länsvalkretsarna omfattade dock tre par omväxlande valkretsar , så att endast en ledamot av ett par var representerad åt gången. Därför hade Skottland fler valkretsar än mandat. Med undantag för Edinburgh var burghs valkretsar distrikt av burghs .
1708 års gränser användes för alla efterföljande val av Storbritanniens parlament.
År 1801 slogs Irlands parlament samman med Storbritanniens parlament för att bilda Storbritanniens parlament, även det i Westminster. Det första allmänna valet av det nya parlamentet var det allmänna valet 1802 , och det skedde ingen förändring av gränserna för någon redan existerande Westminster-valkrets.
1802 års gränser användes även i de allmänna valen 1806 , 1807 , 1812 , 1818 , 1820 , 1826 , 1830 och 1831 .
För 1832 års allmänna val omdefinierades skotska Westminster-valkretsar av Representation of the People (Skottland) Act 1832 .
