Ophiothrix är ett stort släkte av spröda stjärnor (Ophiuroidea) som finns i hav över hela världen från tropikerna till arktiska och antarktiska områden. För närvarande har totalt 93 Ophiothrix- arter erkänts. Det anses vara ett av de mest intressanta släktena på grund av närvaron av dess lysande färger och associationer med koraller och svampar också. Detta släkte har märkts särskilt svårt med avseende på taxonomi , på grund av en hög grad av variation i karaktärer som beskrivs är en morfologisk aspekt.

Evolution

De fossila rekorden av spröda stjärnor kan spåras tillbaka omkring 500 miljoner år till tidig ordovicium . Trots att det har funnits ett stort antal fossiler från paleozoikum , mesozoikum och kenozoikum , är en häpnadsväckande liten mängd känt om gruppens evolutionära historia. Paleozoiska ophiuroider uppvisar en kuslig likhet med de moderna släktingarna med avseende på ambulakrala plattpar som har smält fast i deras kotor och ambulakrala spår som deras ventrala armplattor täcker. De har också närvaron av ventralt laterala armplattor.
