Xinru Liu (född 1951) är professor emeritus i tidig indisk historia och världshistoria vid The College of New Jersey , och har sedan 1993 innehaft en full professur vid Institute of World History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences .

Liu hade lite formell skolgång men arbetade istället som bonde och sedan som fabriksarbetare under kulturrevolutionen . Hon lärde sig engelska och historia och fick tillträde till University of Pennsylvania , där hon tog en doktorsexamen 1985 för arbete med forntida indisk och kinesisk historia. Hennes doktorsavhandling publicerades av Oxford University Press som Ancient India and Ancient China: Trade and Religious Exchanges, AD 1-600 (1988). Hon har skrivit många böcker om indisk och kinesisk historia.

Liu har vunnit ett bidrag från American Association of University Women , 1984, ett bidrag från Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars , 1990. Hennes bok, "Ancient India and Ancient China: Trade and Religious Exchanges, AD 1-600" vann priset för Enastående forskningsarbete utfört mellan 1977 och 1991 från den kinesiska akademin för samhällsvetenskaper . Hon är medlem i American Association of Asian Studies, The American Historical Association och World History Association.

Hennes senaste verk är Dionysos och drama i den buddhistiska konsten Gandhara skrivet tillsammans med Pia Brancaccio och publicerat i Journal of Global History .
