Släktet omskrevs av Raffaele Ciferri i Sydowia vol.8 på sidan 245 1954.
Släktnamnet Strattonia är för att hedra Robert Stratton (1883–1961), som var en amerikansk botanist och mykolog , professor i botanik och växtpatologi vid Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College och vid Agricultural Experiment Station i Stillwater .
