Michael Shernoff (31 mars 1951 – 17 juni 2008) var en öppen homosexuell psykoterapeut som specialiserade sig på att tillgodose de psykiska behoven hos homosexuella , lesbiska och bisexuella människor och var författare till flera inflytelserika publikationer om förebyggande av hiv/aids och homosexuella mäns psykiska oro.

Biografi

Shernoff föddes i Queens, New York , den 31 mars 1951. Han gick i New York Citys skolor. Han tog examen från Harpur College vid Binghamton University och fick 1977 en magisterexamen i socialt arbete från School of Social Welfare vid State University of New York i Stony Brook .

Som legitimerad klinisk socialarbetare erbjöd han polikliniska mentalvårdstjänster i Chelsea i New York City . Han undervisade också vid Hunter College från 1991 till 2001, och från 2002 till sin pensionering 2006 tjänstgjorde han på fakulteten vid Columbia University School of Social Work. Från 1997 till 2004 var han onlineexpert för mental hälsa för HIV/AIDS- webbplatsen TheBody.com.

Han diagnostiserades som HIV -positiv 1982, men levde fri från AIDS-symptom. När hans bror Jeffrey Shernoff dog i bukspottkörtelcancer på Manhattan i juni 2008, berättade hans bror Jeffrey Shernoff för The New York Times att han fann det ironiskt att han efter åratal av att ha levt med hiv-infektion, "dog i bukspottkörtelcancer, vilket kanske inte ens var relaterad."

Professionella bidrag

Shernoff var en tidig volontär för Gay Men's Health Crisis och blev en av de första socialarbetarna i USA att ta itu med AIDS i en privat psykoterapipraktik. Han skrev många artiklar och erbjöd utbildning för både mentalvårdspersonal och patienter om att hantera psykiska aspekter av homosexuell sexualitet och att leva med hiv och aids. 1985 skapade han och Luis Palacios-Jiménez workshopen "Hot, Horny and Healthy: Eroticizing Gay Sex" för en Gay Men's Health Crisis-konferens. Workshopen, avsedd att lära homosexuella män hur man fortsätter att engagera sig i sexuell aktivitet utan att riskera HIV-överföring, presenterades så småningom i städer över hela Nordamerika . En broschyr som han var medförfattare till, When a Friend Has AIDS , översattes till åtta språk.

Shernoff producerade, efter en partners död i aids, en antologi med titeln Gay Widowers: Life after the Death of a Partner som tio år senare beskrevs som fortfarande den enda boken för att ta upp de specifika utmaningarna med sorg för homosexuella män som förlorat sin partner .
