Mary Brenda Hesse FBA (15 oktober 1924 – 2 oktober 2016) var en engelsk vetenskapsfilosof , senare professor i ämnet vid University of Cambridge .

Biografi

Mary Hesse föddes i Reigate , Surrey, till Ethelbert (Bertie) Thomas Hesse och Brenda Hesse (född Pelling).

Från 1949 studerade hon vid Imperial College London , där hon fick en kandidatexamen i matematik 1945, följt av en doktorsexamen i elektronmikroskopi 1948. Hon tog en magisterexamen 1949 från University College London . Hesse föreläste om matematik vid Royal Holloway College från 1947 till 1951, och vid University of Leeds från 1951 till 1955. Från 1955 till 1959 undervisade hon i filosofi och vetenskapshistoria vid University of London (ämnet för hennes 1949 UCL-masterexamen) . 1960 utnämndes hon till en lektorat i samma ämne vid University of Cambridge och 1968 till en läsekrets. Hesse var stipendiat vid Wolfson College från starten 1965 och fungerade som dess vicepresident från 1976 till 1980. Från 1975 till sin förtidspensionering 1985 stannade hon kvar i Cambridge som professor i vetenskapsfilosofi.

Hon såg metaforer som konceptuella verktyg som formade vetenskapliga upptäckter.

Hesse valdes till Fellow i British Academy 1971, som president för Philosophy of Science Association 1979, och tilldelades en Cambridge heders- ScD 2002. Hon gick i pension 1985 och bodde kvar i Cambridge till sin död den 2 oktober 2016.
