William D. Grampp

William D. Grampp (22 augusti 1914 – 30 augusti 2019) var en amerikansk ekonom .

Akademisk karriär

1944 tilldelades han sin doktorsexamen i ekonomi från University of Chicago . Hans avhandling hade titeln "Mercantilism and Laissez Faire in American Political Discussion". Han arbetade som journalist innan han började på University of Illinois , där han undervisade från 1947 till 1980. 1980 blev han professor emeritus och även gästprofessor i samhällsvetenskap vid University of Chicago. 1994 utsågs han till lektor vid University of Chicago Law School .

Han analyserade ekonomisk liberalism i ett tvåvolymsverk publicerat 1965. Han hävdade att ekonomisk liberalism inte var synonymt med laissez-faire ; i den brittiska klassiska liberala tanken "regeringen kan göra vad den kan göra som folket kommer att få den att göra", medan den utilitaristiska liberalen trodde att "regeringen kan göra vad den kan göra som folk får den att göra eller kan få den att tro det borde göra ".
