Vance Randolph (23 februari 1892 – 1 november 1980) var en folklorist som i synnerhet studerade Ozarks folklore . Han skrev ett antal böcker om Ozarks, såväl som Little Blue Books och ungdomsfiktion.

Tidigt liv

Randolph föddes i Pittsburg, Kansas 1892, son till en advokat och en lärare. Trots att han föddes i ett privilegierat hem hoppade Randolph av gymnasiet för att arbeta med vänsterinriktade publikationer. Detta hindrade honom inte från att gå på college och han tog examen från vad som nu är Pittsburg State University 1914. Han fortsatte examensarbete vid Clark University och fick en Master of Arts-examen i psykologi . Han tillägnade senare sin bok Ozark Superstitions (1947) till minnet av sin Clark-mentor G. Stanley Hall . 1917 värvades han till den amerikanska armén och tjänstgjorde till nästa år då han fick en handikapputskrivning som aldrig tjänstgjorde utomlands.

Karriär

År 1927 fick Randolph sin första artikel publicerad i Journal of American Folklore , baserad på arbete om Ozark-dialekt och folktro. Dialektarbetet ledde till flera publikationer under 1920- och 1930-talen i American Speech and Dialect Notes.

Han flyttade till Pineville , McDonald County, Missouri 1919. Han flyttade aldrig bort från Ozarks och stannade kvar i Ozarkbergen från 1920 till sin död. Han försörjde sig på att skriva för sport- och utomhuspublikationer. Medan han skrev använde Randolph pseudonymer, men aldrig för sitt arbete med Ozark-kulturen.

Randolph skrev också om icke-folkloristiska aspekter av Ozark-samhället, såsom musik. Hans Ozark Mountain Folks (1932) beskriver skapandet av en distinkt kyrkokörsångstil skapad av en kår av otrogna, ambulerande körinstruktörer.

Pissing in the Snow and Other Ozark Folktales (1976) var en nationell bästsäljare. Han publicerade över ett dussin verk om Ozark folklore. 1949 grundade han och poeten John Gould Fletcher Ozark Folklore Society.

Högsta betyg

1951 fick han en hedersdoktor vid University of Arkansas . Han var mångårig medlem av Missouri Folklore Society och valdes 1978 till Fellow i American Folklore Society .

Privatliv

Han träffade sin första fru i McDonald County, Marie Wardlaw Wilbur och gifte sig 1919. Han gifte sig med sin andra fru, Mary Celestia Parler 1962.

Död

Randolph dog 1980 i Fayetteville, Arkansas, 88 år gammal.
