Daniel Smith (född 7 oktober 1977) är en amerikansk journalist och författare till boken Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety från 2012 . Han har skrivit artiklar och essäer för The New York Times Magazine , The Atlantic , Slate , n+1 , Harper's Magazine , New York och andra.

Tidiga år

Smith föddes och växte upp i Plainview, New York . Han gick på Brandeis University , där han studerade engelsk och rysk litteratur. Han skrev en humorkolumn för skolans tidning, The Justice , och var medlem i dess improviserade komedi-trupp. Han tog examen 1999.

Karriär

Smith arbetade som personalredaktör för The Atlantic och publicerade sin första stora artikel där 2001. Artikeln, "Shock and Disbelief", handlade om elektrochockterapi och skulle bli centrum för en förtalsprocess mot Smith och tidningen. Den dök senare upp i 2002 års samling The Best American Science and Nature Writing . Smith hjälpte till att redigera 2007 års antologi The American Idea: The Best of The Atlantic Monthly .

Hans första bok, 2007 års Muses, Madmen and Prophets: Hearing Voices and the Borders of Sanity, utforskar historien och vetenskapen om att höra röster. Hans memoarer Monkey Mind från 2012 berättar om omständigheterna som ledde till hans livslånga, ibland förlamande kamp med ångest och dess relaterade symtom.
