JE Mainer (20 juli 1898 – 12 juni 1971) var en gammal amerikansk spelman som följde efter Gid Tanner och hans Skillet Lickers.

Biografi

Joseph Emmett Mainer växte upp på en gård i bergen nära Weaverville, North Carolina , USA, och lärde sig spela banjo och fiol från tidig ålder. Eftersom Wade , hans bror, också var intresserad av att lära sig spela banjo, lämnade han det till Wade och koncentrerade sig på fiolen. Snart började Mainer uppträda på lokala countrydanser. Han fick arbete på ett textilbruk i Knoxville, Tennessee , men flyttade till Concord, North Carolina 1922 för ett annat arbete i ett bruk.

Mainers berömmelse som spelman steg och sponsrades av Crazy Water Crystals 1933, gjorde han och hans nybildade band bestående av JE på fiol, Wade Mainer på banjo och Zeke Morris på gitarr, sin radiodebut på WBT i Charlotte, North Carolina , kallar sig JE Mainer and his Crazy Mountaineers. Bandet dök upp på flera radiostationer de följande åren fram till 1935, då de fick ett skivkontrakt. I augusti samma år spelade Mountaineers, med tillägget av "Daddy" John Love, in för Bluebird Records . Wade Mainer och Zeke Morris lämnade bandet tillfälligt i början av 1936 för att bilda en duo. Under tiden ersatte Ollie Bunn, Howard Bumgardner och Clarence Todd Wade, Zeke och "Daddy" John Love på nästa inspelningssession. Sommaren 1936 återvände Wade och Zeke för att spela in med "the mountaineers". Nästa år, 1937, bildade Wade Mainer "Sons of the Mountaineers". Inom kort inträffade ett nytt personalbyte när Leonard "Lester" Stokes och George Morris blev medlemmar av "bergsbestigarna" som kallade sig "Handsome and Sambo". De lade till Snuffy Jenkins på banjo på följande inspelningssession. I slutet av 1938 ersattes Stokes och Morris återigen av Clyde Moody och Jay Hugh Hall. Bandet fortsatte att uppträda på radiostationer i både North och South Carolina.

Bergsbestigarna upplöstes vid andra världskrigets utbrott , men Mainer fortsatte att spela in i slutet av 1940-talet, tillsammans med sina söner, Glenn och Curly, för King Records. Mellan 1967 och 1971, året för hans död, släpptes bokstavligen hundratals efterkrigsinspelningar på Rural Rhythm Records.

Mainer valdes in i North Carolina Music Hall of Fame den 11 oktober 2012.
