Gordon Francis Sampson (född 30 juli 1971) är en kanadensisk singer-songwriter och producent från Big Pond, Nova Scotia .

Började sin karriär som artist på sin hemstad, ön Cape Breton , både i band och på egen hand, och Sampson har nått internationell framgång som låtskrivare i Nashville . Han har skrivit låtar för Carrie Underwood , Keith Urban , Faith Hill , LeAnn Rimes , Blake Shelton , Miranda Lambert och Rascal Flatts . Han har även släppt album som soloartist.

Sampson har mottagit en Grammy Award, en Juno Award , två ASCAP Awards , East Coast Music Awards och hedersgrader från Cape Breton University och St. Francis Xavier University .

Bakgrund

Sampson föddes 1971 till Francis Xavier Sampson (1946–2007) och Florence Ley. Sampsons enda musikaliska träning som barn var pianolektioner som han tog av sin mamma. Han minns att han var omgiven av spelmän, som var mycket vanliga i Cape Breton. Till en början hade han inget intresse för fiolmusik, utan ville bara vara med i ett rock'n'roll-band. Han lärde sig själv att spela gitarr och spelade i skolband på både högstadiet och gymnasiet, och spelade material från akter som AC/DC och Black Sabbath .

Sampson gick på Riverview Rural High School i slutet av 1980-talet. Hans första band hette Ricochet; han spelade med dem vid 17 års ålder, direkt efter gymnasiet, och gick på en sex månader lång turné i Maritimes. Efter det, i början av 1990-talet, blev han inbjuden att gå med i Nova Scotia-bandet Realworld med bröderna Jamie och Matthew Foulds. Karriär

Efter att Realworld upplöstes, fann Sampson sig alltmer intresserad av att utforska den traditionella keltiska musiken som Cape Breton är välkänd för. Spelningar med lokala musiker ledde honom till en plats i Ashley MacIsaacs band precis när MacIsaac sökte en fusion av traditionell keltisk musik med samtida rock'n'roll. Sampson var med och skrev två låtar på MacIsaacs framgångsrika debutalbum från 1996, Hi™ How Are You Today? .

Ungefär vid samma tidpunkt blev Sampson en del av Rita MacNeils band, både på resande fot och i hennes populära veckovisa CBC - show Rita and Friends . Han turnerade också med den Nova Scotia-baserade familjemusikgruppen The Rankin Family .

Sampson spelade in sitt första soloalbum 1998, med titeln Stones, som spelades in i Lakewind Sound Studios i Point Aconi, Nova Scotia — en inspelningsstudio Sampson och partnern Fred Lavery byggde ihop 1996. Albumet nominerades till en Juno Award ; singeln, "Sorry", vann tre East Coast Music Awards.

I slutet av 1990-talet började Sampson också koncentrera sig mer på sitt låtskrivande, med syftet att få andra musiker att spela in hans låtar. Med tiden började han se hur utmanande detta skulle bli från hans hemstad på Cape Breton. 2005 flyttade han med sin fru och sin bebis till Nashville, även om han visste väldigt lite om countrymusik vid den tidpunkten.

Inom ett år hade Sampson skrivit " Jesus, Take the Wheel ", tidigare American Idol-vinnaren Carrie Underwood hade spelat in den, och låten var nummer ett på Billboard countrylistan i sex veckor. Sampson har sagt att låten var inspirerad av en bekants död i en bilolycka på en motorväg i Nova Scotia två år tidigare. "Jesus, Take the Wheel" skrevs med Brett James och Hillary Lindsey .

Sampson har citerats för att säga att framgången med "Jesus, Take the Wheel" "gjorde underverk för min musikkarriär." Han har sedan dess skrivit låtar som har spelats in av Faith Hill , Keith Urban , Trace Adkins , LeAnn Rimes , Martina McBride , Willie Nelson och många andra välkända countryartister. Han skrev låten "Any Other Day" till Bon Jovi -albumet Lost Highway 2007 . Han har producerat album för Natalie McMaster och Damhnait Doyle.

Sampson har också spelat in ytterligare tre soloalbum sedan sin debut 1998. Hans andra CD, Sunburn (2004), skrevs till stor del i samarbete med Troy Verges och Blair Daly. Sampson producerade CD:n och spelade majoriteten av instrumenten på albumet, inklusive gitarrer, bas, trummor och piano. Albumet spelades in i Lakewind Sound Studios, såväl som i studior i Toronto och Nashville. For The Few And Far Between släpptes 2008; den nominerades till en Juno Award 2009 och fick två East Coast Music Awards.
