Gavin Souter

Gavin Geoffrey Souter AO (född 2 maj 1929) är en australisk journalist och historiker.

Han föddes i Sydney , son till en bankchef, Archibald Souter och Roma Souter, utbildades vid Kempsey High School och Scots College i Warwick, Queensland och tog examen från University of Sydney . Han gick med i The Sydney Morning Herald som kadettjournalist 1947 och arbetade där under de kommande 40 åren, som korrespondent i New York City och London och så småningom som assisterande redaktör för The Herald .

1960 mottog Souter Walkley National Award for Australian Journalism.

Hans böcker har inkluderat New Guinea: The Last Unknown (1963), en historia av utforskningen av alla territorier i Nya Guinea, skriven efter att han hade följt med en första penetrationspatrull som tog första kontakten med Gants-folket i Jimi Valley; A Peculiar People (1968), en redogörelse för New Australias utopiska bosättning i Paraguay ; The Idle Hill of Summer: an Australian Childhood 1939-1945 (1972); Lion & Kangaroo: The Initiation of Australia 1901-1919 (1976). 1981 fick han i uppdrag av John Clunies-Ross, "kung" av Cocos (Keeling) Islands, att forska och skriva historien om det furstendömet i Indiska oceanen. Efter färdigställandet publicerades inte manuskriptet eftersom kommissarien ansåg att det skilde sig från hans eget minne av händelser under hans styre.

1983 gav det federala parlamentariska biblioteket honom i uppdrag att skriva den berättande historien om Australiens parlament . Acts of Parliament publicerades 1988 som en del av parlamentets högtidlighållande av tvåhundraårsjubileet av europeisk bosättning i Australien.

Bland andra böcker av Souter finns två historier om John Fairfax Limited: Company of Heralds (1981), som vann priset Foundation for Australian Literary Studies; och Heralds and Angels: the House of Fairfax 1841-1990 (1992), som vann Victorian Premier's Literary Award .

Han var vicepresident för Australian Society of Authors 1975-78, vice ordförande i Commonwealth Films Board of Review 1981-84 och är beskyddare av Mosman Historical Society.

Hans fru sedan 62 år, Ngaire (född Avison), dog den 26 juli 2014. Han har två döttrar, Anne och Gretel, och ett barnbarn, Rachel Blackburn.

Souter utsågs till medlem av Order of Australia (AM) 1988 och höjdes till officersnivå (AO) 1995. Han tilldelades hundraårsmedaljen 2001 .
