David Coates (24 december 1946 – 7 augusti 2018) var en brittisk-amerikansk politisk ekonom .

Coates tog en grundexamen vid University of York 1967 och avslutade en doktorsexamen i filosofi vid University of Oxford 1979. Han började undervisa innan han tog en avancerad examen, och tjänstgjorde som lektor vid University of York från 1970 till 1971, och flyttade till University of Leeds 1977. Coates lämnade Leeds 1995 för University of Manchester och blev Worrell Chair in Anglo-American Studies vid Wake Forest University 1999. Han dog den 7 augusti 2018, 71 år gammal.
