Clerc Classic

Clerc Classic Basketball Tournament uppstod på Model Secondary School for the Deaf år 2000 under dess atletiska chef, Michael Weinstock, som föreställde sig en nationell basketturnering för framstående idrottare från de bästa dövskolorna. Turneringen äger vanligtvis rum under den andra helgen i januari. Skolan som vinner årets turnering vinner ofta årets Deaf Prep National Championship.

Laurent Clerc?

Laurent Clerc föddes den 26 december 1785. En olycka drabbade honom i ung ålder: ena sidan av hans ansikte brändes efter att han ramlade in i en eldstad. Febern till följd av bränningen slutade med att Clerc blev döv.

Clerc hade så hängivna föräldrar som sökte olika medicinska botemedel innan han fick reda på den kungliga institutionen för döva i Paris, Frankrike . Clercs föräldrar skrev in honom på skolan där han sattes under ledning av skolans direktör, Abbe Roche-Ambroise Sicard . Skolan använde teckenspråk som undervisningsspråk som tillät många av Clercs dolda talanger att dyka upp.

Clerc avslutade sin studie på sju år och belönades med tjänsten som biträdande lärare, ansvarig för högsta klass vid institutionen. Så småningom flyttade han upp som lärare.

En händelse inträffade 1816 under Clercs åttaåriga undervisning som förändrade hans liv för alltid. Han träffade en ung idealist från Amerika, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet , som letade efter ett utbildningssystem för döva. Gallaudet observerade sedan Clerc arbeta med elever under många situationer. Gallaudet bad slutligen Clerc att hjälpa honom att etablera den första skolan för döva i Amerika.

Clerc accepterade och tog farväl av sin familj, vänner och chef. Gallaudet och Clerc avseglade från Frankrike den 18 juni 1816. Under den 52 dagar långa resan fortsatte de att dela sin kunskap med varandra. Vid ankomsten till Amerika började Clerc och Gallaudet samla in pengar genom att låta Clerc presentera instruktionsmetoder för döva med Gallaudet som tolk. De reste längs östkusten, från Boston till Philadelphia, i nästan sju månader. De undervisade och intervjuade föräldrar till döva barn, samtidigt som de fick stöd från samhället. Deras ansträngningar gav resultat med etableringen av den första skolan för döva i Hartford, Connecticut den 15 april 1817. Clerc undervisade där under de kommande 41 åren och gav lektioner i teckenspråk och lärarutbildning.

Clerc gifte sig med en före detta elev, Elizabeth Broadman, och fick fyra barn. Clerc dog den 18 juli 1869.

Dövas liv nuförtiden hade inte varit möjligt utan Laurent Clerc. Som den första dövläraren i Amerika bidrog han i hög grad till utvecklingen av amerikanskt teckenspråk och undervisning för döva.

Snabba fakta

Model, Indiana och California-Fremont är delade för att vara värd för Clerc Classic Basketball Tournament fyra gånger. Modell värd 2000, 2001, 2007 och 2018. Indiana var värd 2003, 2012, 2014 och 2020. Fremont var värd 2002, 2010, 2015 och 2023.
När både pojk- och flickbasketlag från samma skola vinner mästerskapet samma år är det en bedrift. Endast två skolor har gjort detta, Kalifornien-Fremont gjorde det här 2012. Maryland gjorde det två gånger, 2010 och blev den första skolan att vinna båda titlarna på sin hemmaplan under samma år, 2016.

TJEJER

Model och Maryland är de enda flickbasketlagen som har vunnit mästerskapet på hemmaplan, Model har gjort det två gånger 2000 och 2007. Maryland flickbasket har gjort denna bedrift 2016.
Marylands flicklag i basket är det första laget att vinna tre (2001, 2002 och 2003) och fyra (2014, 2015, 2016 och 2017) titlar i rad. Texas blev det andra flicklaget att vinna tre raka titlar från 2018 till 2020.
Maryland School for the Deaf leder för att ha vunnit flest Clerc Classic Girls baskettitlar, och vunnit åtta gånger – 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 och 2017. Texas kommer på andra plats, med fyra titlar.
Under de senaste nitton turneringarna har bara sex skolor vunnit Clerc Classic-titlarna i basket för flickor; Maryland (8), Texas (4), Model (3), Indiana (3), California-Fremont (2) och Minnesota (1).

POJKAR

Model, Indiana och Maryland är de enda pojklagen som har vunnit mästerskapet på deras hemmaplan. Model blev det första pojklaget att göra det 2000, Indiana vann 2003 och Maryland vann på sin hemmaplan 2016.
Modellpojkbasketlag var det första laget som vann två raka titlar, 2001 och 2002, sedan gjorde Indiana det två gånger 2003 och 2004 & 2008 och 2009. Maryland är det tredje laget som gjorde det, 2010 och 2011.
Maryland är det första pojklaget att vinna tre raka titlar från 2018 till 2020.
Indiana School for the Deaf och Maryland är delad ledning genom att vinna flest Clerc Classic Boys baskettitlar, vunnit sju gånger – Indiana vann 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2015 & 2017. Maryland vann 20107, 2010 2011, 2016, 2018, 2019 och 2020.
Under de senaste tjugoen turneringarna har bara fem skolor vunnit Clerc Classic pojkbaskettitlar; Indiana (7), Maryland (7), Kalifornien-Fremont (3), Model (2), Phoenix Day (1) och Kalifornien-Riverside (1).

CHEERLEADING

Model Secondary School for the Deaf har flest Clerc Classic cheerleading-titlar, med nio (2001, 2008, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 och 2023).
Model cheerleading är det första laget att vinna tre (2016, 2017, 2018) och fyra (2016-2019) och fem på varandra följande titlar (2016-2020). De vann titeln 2018 på sin hemmaplan.
Under de senaste tjugoen turneringarna har bara fem skolor vunnit Clerc Classic cheerleading-titlarna; Modell (9), Indiana (5), Maryland (3) California-Riverside (3) och Kalifornien-Fremont (1).
